The book contains fundamentals of solar radiation, its ecological impacts, applications, especially in agriculture, architecture, thermal and electric energy. Chapters are written by numerous experienced scientists in the field from various parts of the world.
Apart from chapter one which is the introductory chapter of the book, that gives a general topic insight of the book, there are 24 more. The solar radiation distributions, based on both calculated and observed data, were related to the synoptic weather types and the variance of solar radiation between synoptic types was shown to be generally greater than the within type variance.
This allowed the establishment of synoptic solar radiation regimes for the British Columbia area. Fig. 1 provides a plot of solar radiation measured at 1-min intervals for one partially cloudy day.
Also shown in this figure is the corresponding hourly radiation that would normally be input to simulation programs. A comparison of the two short-term and hourly curves illustrates the information that is lost by using hourly data rather than minute by: for short-term solar radiation data as compared to existing correlations and by comparing calculated radiation on tilted surfaces and utilizability based on hourly and short-term radiation data.
